TE 887 Electronic Media Production - Virtual Environments in Education
Reflective Statement:
This portfolio item is a Power Point presentation with a link that launches a video showing a virtual world created with the Sauerbraten 3D gaming engine. This item was created for the class TE 887 Electronic Media Production and showcases what can be done within a virtual environment.
Process Statement:
As a final research project for this class we were required to identify some type of media and explore how it could be used to improve learning. I tried to stretch the idea of media beyond audio and video and realized that the most immersive type of media would be that of a virtual world. I was able to locate the open source game engine known as Sauerbraten and was able to make an interesting virtual environment. This portfolio item explains how it could be used in education by presenting a scenario in which the created virtual environment would be most useful.
Assessment Statement:
I believe that this portfolio item is a success in that it shows how this type of media can be used to enhance the educational experience. Additionally this item shows how some of the barriers of physical proximity can be overcome so as to better serve distance education students. I would like to explore using virtual environments more with regards to scenario-based training for soldiers, specifically in helping them learn what certain environments would look like and how to better navigate within them before they are anywhere near the actual area.
